Hello, I've just moved to the second city after living in philadelphia for 10 years. I love this city and have been especially enjoying the food scene. I live just north of wriggleyville and have been enjoying the delicious and inexpenisve Menudo at El Palmar (just a block away from TacQuik which seems to be so beloved on this board)

I am a big fan of tripe done in the italian fashion (red sauce), chinese fashion (a five spice sort of flavor) and as menudo ( a spicy mexican soup meant as a cure for hangovers). Does anyone have any suggestions for tripe dishes to experience in Chicago? More specifically, does anyone know of any italian restaurants that serve a good version?

This is a great board and I thank all of you for making it what it is. Findng a site lke this already makes me feel at home (btw I went to LTH last weekend and had the crispy chicken, salt and pepper squid and snow-pea greens with garlic-- delicious!!)

La Gondola, at 2914 N. Ashland (in the Jewel parking lot, south end) does good trippa.

The tripe at Lao Sze Chuan on Archer Ave is good, but that last time I had it, it was very lightly (but nicely) spiced. I used to eat at a Chinese restaurant in the strip mall on the NW corner of Elmhurst Rd and Oakton (north side of the mall) that made great 5-spice tripe, and they would usually include a few slices of spleen, certain to scare off only the most intrepid diners.

    Hi,

On Friday evening, I dined with ReneG, Gypsy Boy, Sazerac and his wife at Bucovina, a Romanian restaurant. For a first course, we ordered a range of soups from the menu including Tripe Soup.

This tripe soup could also be called Cream of Tripe Soup from the cream sauce base which seemed to be heavy in cream and perhaps some chicken stock. The tripe was so very tender I made a comment which one may interpret as a joke though I was quite serious: this soup really reminded me of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup except tripe substituted for the mushrooms.

While the bean soup seemed to be most everyone's favorite, I must admit I leaned toward the unexpectedly rich tasting tripe soup.
