Le Bouchon and La Sardine (sister restaurants) have 1/2 price wine on Mondays.

I was pleasantly surprised about this special at Jury's.

The menu isn't earth shattering, but it's a cool, casual place. Nice wine list.

I'm liking the 1/2 price menu and slashed drink prices at John Barleycorn on Clark St., just south of Addison. The food has been good and the drinks . . . well, always nice. It's a comfortable place with quality finishes. I think it's one of the better "deals" in the neighborhood - but it doesn't seem to be drawing much of a crowd for these excellent discounts. My recollection is that the reduced prices are in effect Monday > Wednesday (don't know if there are discounts on the days/nights when the Cubs are playing at home).

I was at Jury's two weeks ago on a Monday night. About 6:30 p.m. The place was full by 7:30 - and a short line formed waiting for tables (bar was about full, also). Even with the discount, I didn't think the price was worth what I ate (double the price for two, compared to what we've paid at the Barleycorn). There wasn't a reduction on drink prices, from what I'm recalling - and I was left with the impression that the "discount" on the food was a lost-leader to sell drinks. We ate inside, and I thought the decor a bit sterile. Our waiter was disinterested.

    Bill,
I find myself at Jury's on Wednesday's for burger night . A 1/2 lb blue cheese burger with fries for $6.00 is pretty good. I haven't tried anything else. What did you have at Jury's and what can you recommend at John Barleycorn? Thanks

    Kim,

If I'm recalling correctly my dinner at Jury's - I had a dish of chicken breast sliced and served/mixed with linguini and some vegetables, and it was a generous portion. My friend had crab cakes, and didn't finish them because he said they didn't taste much like crab was mixed in. This was our first and only visit to Jury's.

I've been to the Barleycorn a half-dozen times now - after work on the deep discount nights. I've grown accustomed to the fish and chips. The breading on the fish is light and the fish is done just right (moist yet firm). The potatoes are served cut in a waffle pattern and accompanied by some good slaw. I particularly like the malt vinegar and the tartar sauce condiments. Portions have been generous. Wednesday was (maybe still is) all-you-can-eat fish and chips, for $9. I've also tried the Salmon with portabella mushroom served over angel hair pasta, and the grilled chicken breast over pasta with a marinara sauce and I like those dishes as well. From the sandwich side of the menu I like the tuna melt on black bread. From the long list of alcoholic beverages - I've become a fan of Blue Moon Belgian Ale, and the Barleycorn offers it on tap and fresh (for, I think - $2 a pint on Mon., Tue., and Wed.).
