Hi,

I was in Jewel in Waukegan to pick up the cereal. Maple-flavored Cheerios were not in the cereal section. I was told to check a display by the milk. It wasn't there, but I was redirected to a display by the manager's perch.

When I finally found it, I grabbed a few boxes to give to people in line at check out. I figured since they made it such an uphill experience, I could at least share the largess.

Those people were very, very happy and now clued into how to find future word-of-the-day products.

Hi- I was at the Kosher Jewel on Howard tonight, and when I went to check out, I noticed that self checkout is back. They have 8 self checkout registers and only one person assisting people, and so she was busy. I don't go in that Jewel very often, but I haven't seen self checkout return to any of the Jewel stores in regularly frequent. Has anybody else seen the return of self checkout at your Jewel? I heard they got rid of them because of theft problems, and I am surprised to see them return. I personally like self checkout better, because I can take my time entering my phone number for gas rewards and mymixx. It is a real struggle trying to enter my phone number in one of the regular lanes before the cashier is done ringing up my order. Hope this helps, Nancy

The self checkouts are also back at the Skokie Blvd Jewel. I hate them and will not use them. I was truly upset to see them change from the previous system to the self checkout since they are useless to me. I don't think this is progress. The regular check out lines have been longer, which I suspect is because a lot of people won't use self checkout.

Coincidentally, I was at the Skokie Blvd Jewel yesterday. The self serve checkout was a clunky experience at best. Never again.

Self-checkouts are terrible. You'll have customers in front of you with 20+ items that take forever or are just slow as molasses.

Then when you do get to the machine you get challenged with items that won't scan. That means you have to call over the clerk and wait for them come to you,assuming they're not already tied up helping someone else.

Last but certainly not least, there's always the dreaded "Unexpected item in area" which often turns into a super annoying game of whack-a-mole.

Hi- Somebody over at mash up mom said that all of the Jewel stores are getting self checkout. The Jewel at Plaza Del Lago never had it because it is a smaller store, and so I assume they will not be getting it.

Apparently the self checkout lanes were taken out because of problems with shoplifting. The problem though is that when they took out the self checkout lanes, they did not hire additional cashiers, and so lines at the registers became longer. Jewel then realized that it was time to bring back the self checkout lanes to decrease the long lines at the regular registers.

Personally I don't use self checkout usually if I am purchasing ten or more items. I love using self checkout if I have a small order because when I go to the regular registers, and I try to enter in my phone number, it takes a few seconds for that screen to come up, and if I am only buying 3-4 items, lots of times the cashier is done ringing up my order before I am able to enter in my phone number.

At the Highland Park Jewel, they had one line for express check-out with people going to whomever finished next. That worked out just fine.

At the Wheaton Jewel, their express area had individual lines for each cashier. It never worked out well.

I don't mind self-check, but I don't buy lots of stuff at any one time.

I'm sure I've complained about my Jewel ad nauseam but I'm back.
Ice cream section: looks like 75% low-fat, "enlightened", and/or non-dairy now.
Meat: Finding boneless skinless chicken is like finding the holy grail. (Don't judge ) And woe if you want more than one cut of beef. I've found better selection at Happy Foods.
Produce: The entire section is counter-intuitive. Lemons and limes at opposite ends, garlic nowhere near the onions, berries separated in at least two different places...? And I'm often left to try Cermak Produce for basics like red cabbage, parsnips, mangoes, and other common things.
It seems like they're getting away from raw ingredients and stocking up on convenience foods, prepared meals, etc. Nice, but all I want to do is make a meal. Otherwise I'd head to a restaurant.
Don't get me started on the signage.
