I'll be there, on my way to Wells Bros. in Racine. That will be a great 1-2 punch.

For some reason, I can't link to their calendar--even the PDF version doesn't work for me.
What time and exactly where will they be in Gurnee?
    Any other Chicagoland stops? Thanks.

thanks so much for the info on the delivery for peaches and blueberries! I happened to be in Waupaca WI last year at the right time and got lucky to be one of the first at the truck. I didn't recall the name and have been looking for it for about a week!

Was able to get 2 boxes of peaches and 2 of blueberries this weekend.
    Delish!
The lines were crazy and the truck was not very full.
I hope the people at the back of the line were not "shut out"
Made blueberry jam on Sun-looks like it turned out good (for once!)
Maybe I'll sample some tomorrow morning...
Almost makes me wish my blueberry loving boy was home from camp, almost.

Just curious, what was the price on a case of peaches?

The peach truck schedule for 2014 has been posted. Looks like there will be some buying opportunities within easy reach of Chicago during the first week of July (and other times, too).

Last couple of days I've been scoring some small-but-dynamite Georgia peaches at Garden Fresh/Mundelein, and they've been outstanding. Eat-over-the-sink juicy, sweet flesh vs. tart skin. Dunno if they're Freestones, but at 99 cents a pound I've been buying 20 at a crack. Made a special trip yesterday.

And knowing the way that Adi Mor and his group buy, I would imagine these peaches are readily available at all Garden Fresh locations, but once they're gone, they're gone.

This year's crop is very good. The peaches are a little smaller than last year, but the flavor is intense. Last night, I made a peach salsa that I served with some maple brined pork chops and it was a big hit. My favorite way to eat these peaches remains au natural out of hand. They are so much better than any of the locally grown peaches from Michigan that it's almost like they are a different fruit.

Agreed that the early shipment this year is a tad on the small size. Made the first of my usual 2 runs to the Menard's in Gurnee yesterday. Very sweet and juicy, as usual. I've grown tired of debates with folks that grew up here (I'm from the SE) that there really is a difference between GA/SC peaches and MI's and just leave them to their own (their loss). Hoping that the subsequent shipments yield a little larger variety. In the meantime enjoying some delicious freshness, makes a great afternoon pick-me-up at my desk at work.

Steve was kind enough to bring me a bunch of peaches from the most recent stop, which I really appreciated. I thought they smelled great but also thought that they were very tart and lacked sweetness. That and their small size made it seem like maybe they were picked too early. They don't get sweeter after they're picked, only softer. That seemed to be the case with this most recent batch. I ended up cooking with them, instead of eating them out of hand, which was still a great option.

I live just outside the prime peach growing area in Georgia and I can report from first hand experience that not only do peaches soften after picking, they actually DO get sweeter. The pickers at Lane Southern Orchards (world's largest peach operation) pick peaches 2 days before they expect peak texture/taste. They are rock-hard with no aroma. Two days later, sweet, aromatic and juicy. I know science says this isn't so, but my taste buds say different.

Yeah, not only does my experience vary 180 degrees from yours but all I've read on the subject indicates that peaches don't get sweeter after picking. Who knows, maybe there's some variation between varieties?

The peaches we see at places like Kroger are rock hard, "fuzzless", and have absolutely zero aroma. Two days later after sitting on the kitchen counter they are soft, and the whole room is perfumed with peach. For several years after moving here I did not buy the hard peaches, but after talking with a worker at Lane I am quite happy to load up on them. I suppose variety could have something to do with it; Lane grows 37 of them.
