My craving for Ann Sather's cinnamon rolls kicked in last night, and were unabated this morning. So we packed up the sedan for the long drive to Ann's in Andersonville from Skokie. We used to go all the time when we lived in the city, but it's probably been at least a couple years.

Cinnamon rolls were the same. Delicious. Gooey. Sweet. I ordered a feta cheese and spinach omelet, which is my fave combo at Mitchell's and Annie's Pancakes in Skokie.

BUT...what a bizarro omelet! It wasn't French-style, and it wasn't puffy Greek-style. The spinach wasn't chopped, but in whole leaves and a little watery. The omelet itself wasn't folded over, but seemed like it was finished in a broiler, more like a frittata. And the feta cheese was just sort of dumped on top of the "omelet," not folded in with the ingredients. To make matters worse, the eggs were super super hard, not to my personal taste.

When the server asked how everything was, I told him I wasn't a big fan of the style of omelet. He checked with the manager who told him that this was their way of doing omelets, and I could request a folded over omelet and to have the cheese mixed in and for an "easy" egg. They were nice enough to offer to make me another one but I really wasn't that hungry (cinnamon bun and about one egg's worth of omelet by then), and I figured who knows what they would do with it?!

In all fairness, my husband loved his breakfast burrito and the young one's pancakes and eggs were just fine. Next time I think I'll just go with coffee and rolls, and back to Annie's Pancakes for the omelet.

It's been some time since I've been there, but way back before the Millennium, it was my opinion that the feta (w or w/o spinach) omelette at Lou Mitchell's (on Jackson) was the best feta omelette in town. Any further current opinions?

On a related note: The breakfast nook on Roosevelt and Wabash, formerly known as Room 12 and now re-christened The Bongo Room (2?) is now open for business after several months of closure due to difficulties beyond their control (altho the 9:00 weekend opening still seems a bit odd to us early-rising South Loopers, perhaps not the case for those hard-partying Wicker Parkers).

jbw, I only had this combo at the Clybourne location, but in my mind it is the gold standard of omelettes. Incredibly fluffy and light, great balance of cheese to egg and spinach, and impossibly large. It actually holds up to leftover eating, and usually I do not take home leftover egg dishes!

If anyone else has thoughts or recommendations on feta/spinach omelettes (especially in the north shore area), I'd be grateful! I am truly addicted to this combo, and I think it was Mitchell's that did it to me.

I'd also like to add that Noyes Cafe in Evanston does a pretty decent omelette. They have a tasty house omelette with spinach, tomato and feta cheese.

Mitchell's on Clybourne and Lou Mitchell's are two sepearate and distinct places with different ownership. They are not branches of the same restaurant, so that means that there are at least two different restaurants serving exceptional feta/spinach omlettes.

That's still my go-to for a feta omelette. I always order the "Greek cheese special"; feta cheese, onions, and tomatoes. I don't know that it's actually on the menu as such but I've been ordering it that way for over 20 years. To satisfy my meat jones I usually get bacon or sausage links on the side. The feta always seems nice and fresh and considerably softer/creamier than that which I find in some other feta omelettes.
