My business partner and I are going to Alinea tonight to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our business, and as bizarre as it sounds: I'm nervous! What is wrong with me??
The most nerve-wracking issue is what to wear. Is Alinea very formal? Will people sneer at me if I wear a skirt and a nice simple top? I really don't have much to wear between casual and very formal, and while I think I can look nice, I don't know about looking Nice, if you know what I mean.
Is it a hushed voices kind of place? If I clink my spoon against my plate accidentally will that be a tremendous faux pas? Will the wait staff all stand around and stare menacingly as we finish our 12 course meal so very late in the evening/early in the morning? (Our reservation isn't until 9pm, and from what I hear the meal will take some time...)
Why do I worry about these things? Don't get me wrong, I am seriously excited about going, but I just have this strange anxiety about it, too. And it seems like sacrilege to do a couple of shots before going in order to calm my nerves.

If you're male, I'd suggest againt a skirt. Unless, of course, you're Scottish.

I haven't been there, but I heard the Chef on WBEZ say if it takes his diners until 3:00 a.m. to finish their meal, he and his staff would happily hang in until the end. My advice, wear something with not too tight a waistband and focus on the food! (And post a report so we can live vicariously...)

No worries. As nice a restaraunt as it is, I never got the feeling of being uncomfortable (AKA "Stuffy").

I wore a nice skirt, dressy top and heels and felt I was dressed appropriately. There was a woman next to us that had on a sleeveless top and matching pants...looked very nice. My husband wore a sport coat and dress pants.

Relax and take it all in...a great dining experience! They were in no hurry to rush us and others I have talked to who went recently had 9pm reservation and they didn't leave until early am .

    Have a great time!

If your reservation is at 9 and you do the 12 course menu, you should be done no later than 1am, especially given that you'll be a party of 2.

Both times I've been I've worn a suit with no tie and didn't feel underdressed either time.

My advice is to go in ready to have fun. The atmosphere and the waiters are a bit more lighthearted than you might expect. I've had an extremely good time both times I've been and have never felt like I was being "judged" on my behavior.

Thanks so much everyone--I feel much better (although very silly) and now I can concentrate on looking forward to the food, the atmosphere, the wine...the whole shebang!

I will certainly post a full report soon afterwards, once I recover.
