    Hi everyone,

Please help me. I'm looking for good Mexican food in the western suburbs. I love Mexican but my husband never wants to go, we've had "ordinary" at best too many times & he's shy of trying again (he claims the only good Mexican food he's had is at a place in Nashville). So any suggestions for a restaurant that isn't 8 hours away are welcome!

    Thanks!

Well, if you're willing to drive a ways, there's (possibly) the best Mexican food in Chicago not THAT far away.

This post talks about a little exploring I did in the Aurora area. I saw a number of the names we see in the city, like Taqueria las Comales, which you could at least find info on the city branches of.

Beyond that-- it will take some hunting and driving to areas you don't usually visit, I suspect. I saw a lot of Mexican in the Elgin, Aurora, etc. area and I have to suspect some of it is pretty damn good but you're not going to find good places on the well known restaurant rows, they can't afford those rents and it's not where their community is. So it's out there, but may not be exactly convenient-- let us know what you find.

If you will revise your subject line to include "Western suburbs," I suspect more people who live and eat out that way will notice it.

You also don't say which western suburbs. West stretches a long way.

Here's a link to some discussion on La Quebrada in Cicero.

There is also a loosely connected location in Glen Ellyn, where dees_1 eats three times a week. I have been there and can recommend the carne Oaxaquena, a flavorful piece of meat blanketed in cactus, mushrooms and onions in spicy tomato sauce, as well as the filete a la Quebrada, fish with shrimp and octopus.

Hands down best Mexican in the western burbs. And yes, as LAZ states, I'm there three times a week! Every Sunday for desayuno and a couple times a week for general chow. We've eaten most everything on the menu and everything is wonderful.

Carne Oaxquena is outstanding, as is Pechuga Oaxquena (chicken breast instead of flank steak). They'll make stuff for you off menu if you ask.

Our family's favorite place for mexican food is Las Palmas in Naperville.

I see there are 9 of them in the yellow pages, but only the Naperville and Westmont locations are affiliated, to my knowledge.

I cannot say I've been to the one in Westmont though.

Very wide selection, about 60+ dishes, with great combination platters of all the staples. Has a bit of a seafood bent to the menu, which has some good selections to it.

New to this forum, so my next visit will be taking some notes for a better report.

I hope that the Las Palmas affiliation from location to location is loose indeed, as the place doing business as Las Palmas in Mundelein should be avoided at all costs. In fact, I no longer entertain dining suggestions from a particular sister-in-law based on that one disastrous recommendation. It's what I imagine might be served at Mexican Food Night at Menard Correctional Center. I really don't like firebombing places like this, and I'm happy to elaborate if anyone feels I'm being unfair, but this is as close to a public service message as you'll get from me.

If you were to replace Mundelein with Naperville you would have my sediments exactly. For Mexican I find myself heading south to Amanacer Tapatio in Joliet or I head north to El Tesoro in Glendale Heights. I will admit to having the ocassional margarita at the Naperville location, though.

So often, you don't look at the address. Isn't it 690 Roosevelt?

    Hi,

In West Chicago, there is ByBy's.

Places to eat around Geneva as well as a thread covering pretty good Mexican.

    Regards,

LAZ, it could have been a case of rented fingers. Or dyslexia. Numbers on a lap top keyboard (or typewriter, for that matter) are not my strong suit!

Thanks for the correction....it certainly is 690.[/quote]
