Disappointing lunch at Hecky’s on Halsted today. The rice in the rice and beans had been cooked to a decomposed mush. My friend’s grilled chicken salad never showed up and, when he inquired as to its whereabouts, discovered it had been packed to go and left sitting on the counter. Cleanliness has slipped since last visit. I recommend Stanley’s Chirp’n Chicken instead-- good sandwiches, decent rib tips and a real manager on premises.

Stanley's also has some mighty fine rice pudding. If you're lucky enough to get there when it's freshly made, you can get it warm. MMMMMMM warm rice pudding.

I haven't been in STanley's since they closed and remodeled - is it sit down now? From across the street while buying ridiculously cheap organic vegetables it looks like they spiffed it up.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but as I understand - the Hecky's on Halsted is only loosely affiliated with the original in Evanston. I spoke with someone who introduced himself as "one of the owners" of the Halsted location. He explained he bought the rights to use the Hecky's name and was planning on expanding to other locations. Personally, I have been underwhelmed during my few visits to Halsted and can attest the food does seem substandard compared to Evanston.

Can't find the thread now, but it's been discussed here before that Hecky decided to franchise his name without adding sufficient quality control provisions to the contract. Stick to the original.

I wonder if they learned that from Uno's or Al's.

we called them.... we spent 10 minutes on the phone repeating ourselves... "what?" "ribs" ... It wasn't that she couldn't hear us because we were on a cell phone or something stupid... The girl was dumber than a box of rocks. Eventually, after giving our credit card info to her 3 times, she repeated our order. We told here we wanted ribs with a side of beans (in fact, that's all we wanted). She apparently had a different conversation, she repeated something about 3 fried chickens, and 3 or 4 different sides that I know we didn't say... Not wanting to repeat our order for the 11th time, we just hung up and called some other rib joint..
