I went to the Cubs game last night with a buddy of mine who asked me to grab a sausage sandwich for him when I went to get food. Now, I've never even eaten passable food at Wrigley, but this sausage sandwich was the bomb.
It was Scala's, served with red sauce, fried peppers and onions fresh off the grill, and hot giardenera. It was on a hot dog bun, and it would probably have been better supported on an Italian roll, but the flavors were awesome, the sausage was extremely tender, and the race to eat the sandwich before the bun disentegrated under the sauce and oil made things interesting.
Apparently only a few stands sell this, and the one I went to was downstairs beneath section 226. I don't want to say that this is on a par with Johnnie's, because I didn't taste the sausage alone, but the combined ingredients and the tenderness of the sausage made it one of the best sausage sandwiches I've had.
