Dagwood's Sandwiches

Any early buzz on Dagwood's in the Loop (Franklin b/n Randolph and Lake)?

friends at work went on tuesday; most said it was okay, prices decent, but nothing spectacular. most compared the sandwiches to potbelly's. they do sub-type rolls, but not toasted (at least, i don't think).

i'll probably get down there at some point, as that's the type of place i love (sandwiches, soup, salads).

it seems like not only might they taste like potbelly's... they seem to be trying to copy it?

their menu items are almost the same... their logo colors are strikingly similiar... on their web site, their fax in order form is almost an EXACT copy of potbelly's, with the exception of it having their logo...

i did a lil googling to see if it was the same company and I don't think it is...

Since Potbelly's is doiong a National rollout, I smell a lawsuit in the air is it's really that similar. Got to protect that trademark, you know.

actually it looks like potbelly updated their fax form... it used to be the same layout as the dagwoods one... the ones i have printed in my office stash are the old format.. o well

Heck, I'd say it looks like more of a ripoff of Dagwood's Deli & Sub Shop in Bloomington, IN.

Although I'm just saying that because of the name..

Let's be honest, these places are all ripoffs of each other, or of some great-grandparent of a sub shop in a college town somewhere.

I did love Dagwood's in B-town... ate plenty of Hoosier Hoagies. That's what came to mind when I read this thread title as well.

Dagwoods (no apostrophe, due to French-language labelling laws) is also a pretty widespread sandwich chain in Montreal. The sandwiches look pretty mediocre though.

I met my husband for a fancy anniversary lunch at Dagwood's today - a 1/2 way point between our offices.

I had the Spicey Peanut Chicken Salad sandwhich. This was very good - on toasted wheat with lettuce and tomato. No mayo in this chicken salad, think peanut dressing, chopped grilled chicken breast, cilantro, and shredded carrots.

My husband's dagwood was not. For an almost $9 sub he should have gotten his money back. It did let us try all the lunch meats...they were not fresh, and low quality. Greasy salty flavorless pepperoni. Bland Roast Beef that was of a gray shade, shaved turkey breast/jello, ham? maybe? Just all around flavorless. for what you spend you could get 2 Wrecks at Potbelly or a gargantuan at Jimmy John's and have a vastly superior experience. (No, it's not Fontano's or Bari - but in the genre, those subs reign supreme, IMO)

Also tried the chocolate chip cookie...ick. Definitely Crisco. Over baked. Cheap chocolate...nothing good about it. Didn't even finish it.

In short - unless you like Spicy Peanut Chicken - go around the corner to Potbelly.
