Hi--My family and I have eaten at Las Cazuelas over the years, first when it was on Pulaski, north of Lawrence, and then in the new location near Elston/Lawrence. My husband catered many an office party from there, and the staff was always happy. They are not Mexican foodies--they're all from Poland--but they enjoyed the variety and levels of spiciness.
Owner Ricardo Caballero used to be a long time waiter at Morton's on State St., intersecting with when I worked in the restaurant group's office. It is obvious he knows about service and cares about his restaurant.
I've had great and middle of the road experiences at Las Cazuelas. As a neighborhood place, that has nice surroundings, attentive service, great margaritas and pretty good food, I don't think it should be dismissed out of hand because of old reviews. All of us have different taste buds. It may not be spectacular, but it's solid. And sometimes ambiance and convenience counts for something! I'm willing to go there in the near future to see how the place is holding up. Maybe the originator of the post can go as well and deliver her assessment. I think that's only fair.
One of the biggest laments in our neighborhood, Old Irving Park, is the lack of good restaurants in the area. If you're a restauranteur looking for the next "hot" area, come west of Pulaski. The demographics here are incredible, and we're tired of eating at the same 10 places--or driving. Smacznego--Anna
