Despite living close by, I've only eaten at/from S.W. a couple of times, so I look to those with greater experience to tell me if I ordered wrong.
My NY parents were in town so I went out for a walk with my dad and we spontaneously decided to pick up bits and pieces from several stops on Argyle and bring it all home for an Argyle take-out collage dinner.
The Sun-Wah component was a combo-platter (roast pork, duck, soy sauce chicken) and an order of water spinach (aka hollow vegetable).
The meats were all fine, but none were exceptional. The duck and the chicken were not even all that distinct from each other.
The ong choy seemed excessively oily without being lifted by the aromatic blast of fresh garlic that one gets in the Silver Seafood version.
Should we have opted for the house style "salt baked" chicken or Par pei duck instead?
Are any of the regular menu items of note at all? (I hadn't even realized that they did a large non-BBQ menu. Fish fillet w/ scalion ginger sauce, etc.
A couple of notes on the Nhu Hoa items:
In the past, it seemed as if they did everything on site, but last night it seemed to me that both egg rolls and spring rolls may well have been made elsewhere. They both came tightly wrapped in plastic on small styro trays exactly as one sees them at Ba le and other places that just sell them over the counter. Whereas previously, the Nhu Hoa versions came in the white cardboard "take out" containers just like the rest of the meal and seemed more freshly assembled. Didn't see any of this till we got home, so I was not in a position to ask.
Their "fried chicken" was quite nice, though not Thai style. Boneless pieces of thigh (I'm pretty sure) with just a tingle of heat and plenty garlic and a hint of lemongrass.
"Strange how potent cheap music is."
