    Global Stuffed Treats...by Bike
Pierogi, samosas and pupusas, oh my!

Hellodali and I had such a fabulous time last summer on the Giro del gelato, the Tour de France LTH-style and the Vuelta a tacos; we can't wait to get out on out on the road again with other LTHers to explore the city and food by bike.

We are very pleased to announce the first LTH bike ride of 2009--Global Stuffed Treats: Pierogies, samosas and pupusas, oh my!

    Sunday, May 31st
    11am-5pm

In the tradition of last summer's rides, we welcome suggestions for stops. Stuffed treats can be anything--dolmas, empanadas, pasta, donuts (filled, stuffed--same thing)... I'll plot all of the suggestions on the "Stuffed Treats" map. To get us started, I've mapped the following ideas:

    - Habana Libre for empanadas
    - Patisserie P for chicken buns
    - Avec for chorizo-stuffed dates
    - Sun Wah for stuffed tofu

When we get closer to the date, Hellodali and I will narrow down the list. We'll post the final itinerary in early May. Post here with suggestions and/or if you'd like to join us. We'll cap the number of participants on bike at 12 for safety. Folks are also welcome to join us at stops by public transit or any sort of motor vehicle.

    Sharon and Dimitra

    Participant List*
    Hellodali (bike)
    happy_stomach (bike)
    Fresser (bike)
    Cabbagehead (bike)
    JermAngela +1 (bike)
    nr706 (bike)
    leek (bike)
    dansch (bike)
    chop2342 +1 (bike)
    JimTheBeerGuy (bike)
    mark5 (bike)

    Octarine (motorcycle)
    Pie Lady (maybe/driving)

*We have two more spots for people on bikes; still welcoming people coming by car or public transit

Might I suggest a start with the unmatched chocolate bismarcks at Dinkels, captured beautifully in this photo by Mike G:

How 'bout the chorizo-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dates from Avec and the bacon buns from Bridgeport Bakery (or is that too far to ride)?

Put me down as a 'maybe/driving'. That may be the day we're taking Pie Dude's father to Klas. I'll stay tuned for more 'deets.

    Cabbagehead,

You are in good company, Prince Philip refers to Queen Elizabeth as Cabbage Head. I will guestimate it is due to her hair style.

Giving this thread a bump since May is just around the corner. Dimitra and I are proposing the following itinerary:

    1. Dinkels (bismarcks)
    2. Smak Tak (pierogi)
    3. King Sweets (samosas)
    4. Patisserie P (chicken buns)
    5. Habana Libre (empanadas)

Please speak up if you have any strong feelings about how to make the ride more international or...stuffed. Dimitra and I are going to test ride in about two weeks and post a final and more detailed itinerary then. There are still plenty of spots left--we could take up to 7 more people. Please let us know if you'd like to join us. :D

Looks like you're all full up; I'd been holding off on posting since we had a move brewing some time in May and I wasn't sure if I'd be available. However we're all moved in now apart from some boxes that still need emptied. This sounds like a good time if you have room for me; otherwise, please waitlist me and let me know if any openings come up!

Jim, we'll take you. There are always last-minute switcheroos anyway, so I highly doubt we'll be oversubscribed.

Sorry to everyone about the delay with posting additional details. I've been sidelined now two weeks in a row with bike issues. Here, finally, is the proposed itinerary.

If you've ridden us before, you know that Dimitra and I are big safety geeks. Please read (or review if it's been a while) these guidelines for riding in groups

THE SAFETY GEEK’S GUIDE TO RIDING IN GROUPS
*Stay alert – Much as you would like to be mentally savoring that last taste of gelato or thinking ahead to the next flavor you will try, pay attention to everything going on around you and try not to let your mind wander.

*Be predictable - Other riders will expect you to continue straight ahead at a constant speed unless you let them know otherwise. Avoid sudden turns, stops, or erratic moves.

*Use hand signals - Use hand and verbal signals to communicate with riders and other traffic: Left turn - left arm straight out to the side; Right turn, left arm out and bent at the elbow pointing up; stopping or slowing: left arm pointing down with your palm to the rear, or call out “slowing” or “stopping.”

*Only pass other riders on the left – When passing another cyclist or pedestrian, call out "on your left" to warn them that you are passing.

*Announce hazards – Riders behind you may not have a good view of the road ahead, so point out and loudly announce potholes, glass, gravel, grates, and other hazards. Also, if a parked car looks like it’s about to make a move (turn signal on to merge into traffic, driver looking like they might be about to open the door), point them out to riders behind you.

*Be super careful at intersections - When approaching intersections requiring vehicles to yield or stop, call out "slowing" or "stopping" to alert those behind you. When passing through an intersection, look to your left and right and loudly warn the cyclists behind you if there is a car near the intersection by yelling “car left” or “car right”. If there is no car visible, you may yell “clear.” However, everyone is responsible for making sure they are clear to go through the intersection. Even if someone ahead of you yells “clear”, that doesn’t mean you should just breeze through. You should still slow down and look both ways before crossing the intersection.

*Move off the road when you stop - Whether you are stopping because of mechanical problems or to regroup with fellow riders, move well off the road so you don't interfere with traffic.

*Ride single file – Most of the streets we will be riding will have pretty consistent traffic so you want to stay single file and not weave back and forth between riding single or double. The only exception to this is when we are merging as a group into the left hand lane in order to make a left hand turn. We can then bunch up a bit to “take the lane.”

*And lastly, don’t forget your helmet! (and a bike lock if you have one)

Again, it's not that we're fussbudgets trying to restrict your freedom and fun on the ride. It's just that after logging so many miles over the years, we've seen many a close call (and had a few ourselves) and so appreciate that following the rules for riding safely will make it more likely that we'll all finish the ride safely.

I'll post the route directions once I can get my bike fixed and test the last leg of the ride. We'll also have printed copies of all of the directions that day and will PM our cell phone numbers a few days before the ride. Please post here if you have any questions. We can't wait to ride and eat with everyone!

After plotting the route last week, I have to say I'm quite tickled with it as a good chunk of the route is on side streets and out of heavy traffic except for a few moments on Lincoln early on and the last leg down to Habana Libre. And the bismarcks at Dinkel's are on hold and will be ready for us when we get there!

Just one more week! Below is the itinerary again, this time with directions and approximate distances. I've also updated the Google ride map with the route. We'll have photocopies of the directions to share on Sunday. Kudos to my partner-in-crime Dimitra, my personal GPS, without whom I'd always be lost and hungry. Dimitra's route for this ride is a very fine one as far as city riding goes--lots of bike lanes and quiet streets, very few busy patches.

Please post with any questions. I will PM our cell phone numbers later in the week. Make sure your bike is in good working order if you haven't already. We look forward to riding and eating with you. See you at Dinkel's at 11am on Sunday!

Excellent! Our track record for staying on schedule is pretty good, but let me know if you or any others coming by car would like a text message or phone call from me as we're leaving stops (or just the previous one) so that you can be more sure of our timing.

For others, we're still welcoming folks to join us by car or public transit. However, please let us know if you plan us to join us by these other means since we've reserved bismarcks, chicken buns, samosas and seating for pierogi and empanadas. We'll adjust our numbers accordingly.

    Thanks!
