If anyone was on the waitlist for the first Dessert Exchange planned by happy stomach, I'm up for hosting a second exchange!

Time/space: I was thinking of late afternoon on Sunday March 22-- but day and time are flexible. I live on the south end of Evanston (about a half mile from Rogers Park border). I'm in a smallish condo, but there's room for about 8 people to comfortably sit around and eat. I'll have some light appetizers and maybe wine, and of course coffee for the desserts. (FYI--I tend to brew on the strong side.)

Vibe: I'm an LTH newbie and have never met any of the "lifers" or attended any of the events. But I'm up for hanging out with people who love to bake, and I'll eat dessert just about anywhere/anytime and in any situation. I'm an amateur baker, but professionals are welcome (assuming they don't scoff at our more humble creations!) The idea would be to discover and share more recipes, whether it's an original creation, your spin on a classic, an old family fave, or something you've tried from one of the 5 million baking books out there. Doesn't need to be exotic, but fancy stuff is great, too. We can discuss parameters and purpose more when we meet.

Dessert: Plan on bringing enough for everyone to sample and/or bring a little home. Copies of the recipe would be great too, though not mandatory since I understand some are heirlooms.

Let me know if you're interested and what you'd like to bring. . .

(So--how'd I do for following the LTH events rules?)

    Inasreen,

I noticed that there have not been responses to your kind offer. I wonder about three things: 1) whether Sunday afternoon is the right time. These exchanges have typically been on Monday evening, allow contributors to cook on Sunday, 2) the other dessert group seems more focused on bringing home desserts, rather than consuming them (although I may have misread your intent), and 3) perhaps it makes sense to repost after a report about the first meeting of the first dessert group in March to see how things go.

There certainly should be enough interest in Evanston, north Chicago, and the Northern suburbs for more exchanges. Good luck.

If you ever have lunchtime free in Evanston, perhaps you might join the Evanston Lunch Group (this Wednesday at Jilly's).
Toast, as every breakfaster knows, isn't really about the quality of the bread or how it's sliced or even the toaster. For man cannot live by toast alone. It's all about the butter. -- Adam Gopnik

    GAF:
Thanks for the response. I was a bit surprised considering the initial wave of interest for the first group, but I think you might be right about time and set-up.

I did intend for this to emphasize the exchange part--not the eating part--and that may not have come through clearly. Also, I didn't consider that a weeknight is probably a better bet for a lot reasons, including baking time.

I'm planning to cancel the event and, as you suggested, see how things go with the first group. In my opinion, something like this can work well when you trade off hosting. I'm also considering whether a more specific dessert theme or category might be fun.

And yes, I''ll definately keep an eye out for the next Evanston lunch group. I hope Jilly's was nice-- I've drooled over the menu a few times but haven't actually made it in there yet.

inascreen: i hope you aren't hurt that no one (except, finally, GAF) responded to your kind invitation. i'm on the wait list for the first event, which is much closer to me, and was going to see if i ended up going to that one before responding. i suspect others felt the same. hope to meet you soon at some event. justjoan
