I am planning to nominate the greatest neighboorhood restaurant (IMHO,) within walking distance of my house, for a GNR this month. I'll elaborate as to why in my "official" nomination, but if you've never tried it, or would like to re-visit it, please join me for some thin crust, some Greek Salad, perhaps some fried appetizers, and a beer or two at a Mayfair classic. I'm going to suggest two dates and see what happens - Tuesday, September 16th or Thursday, September 18th. Any interest? -Lynn

Count me among the fans of Marie's as well. I've been going there since the 50's and think it would make a fantastic GNR, if someone wanted to nominate it. I'd love to join you on the 16th, but would probably be too full and drunk after the He-man's Meat Eater Lunch on the 18th to be able to join you on that date.

I would like to join you as well, but am only able to make the 16th.

    Might I propose.

Joe & happyeater - consider yourselves "signed up."

Pdane - due to the casual nature of this restaurant, the food, and (I hope I can speak for this group, ) the group, - please feel free to drop in whenever you can. If there is something specific you'd like to ensure is ordered, PM me.

I'm hoping someone in this group likes anchovies on their pizza. It's pathetic how I have to get the anchovies on the side of the Greek Salad we usually share, then save some to add to my half of our pizza. The compromises you have to make when married!

We're at 8ppl, 9 if Pdane comes. I'll walk over this weekend to reserve initial space. I think they can easily accomodate a few more, but I'll find out what number they think it would be best to cap things off at for optimal pizza & conversation friendliness. -Lynn

    Thanks!

The casual nature of this group sometimes means starting 7pm dinners at 7:30 or 7:45... and I am one of the worst offenders

Maybe I should try to catch you at 10 when I am headed down Lawrence again.

Sausage, Onions and Anchovies is my standard order. Marie's makes a particularly good version, especially when ordered well done.

I don't have a standard order but I do LOVE anchovies. The more, the better. I'm sure I'll be fine with whatever pizza is ordered, especially if there's lot of anchovies.

jygach - you'll be the first to know if someone drops out.

For those who have never been, Marie's has 2 sizes of pizza - small and large. A large thin crust will serve 2-3 adults. With some appetizers and salad, we may be able to plan on 3 servings per pizza. We'll just see how hungry everyone is. :) In any event, with 4-5 pies, we should be able to accomodate everyone's favorite toppings.

Also, please be prepared to pay with cash. There is an ATM in the attatched liquor store. Marie's still writes their guest checks by hand and uses adding machines. While they do accept credit cards, several of them being dropped on the same table would create quite a strain on our server's time and possibly cause other guests service to suffer.

I'll be there to check us in around 6:45 p.m. See you next week!

P.S. - For those so inclined, Marie's now offers Peroni on tap. (Trust me - a very nice addition to what was previously their only tap selections.) Also - Tuesday's are $2 Leinenkugel Honey Weiss's.

And if wine is more your style, you can buy any bottle you want in the liquor store and they'll serve it for a corkage somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.50, IIRC.

    Hi,

Jygach, my failed memory is your bonus: you can have my seat at Marie's.

I forgot I was hosting a program on Architect William W. Boyington at the Highland Park Library at the same time. He was a Highland Park resident who designed the Chicago Water Tower.

Maybe stevez could be convinced to bring some of his giardiniera?
