If the lighting isn't great, color print film is your best option. It's more forgiving of bad lighting conditions than slide film or digital cameras.

Most consumer cameras do not focus well when held fewer than 3 feet from the subject. If you want good close-ups, you should have a telephoto lens or a camera that is designed for close-ups.
IMHO a few things need to be corrected...
Digital can be corrected by the user with any # of programs (many free)
Color neg film (unless printed by a very professional lab) will be color corrected by a computer chip no better that what is in most digital P&S cameras.
Just about every digital camera has a macro or "flower" setting and that will work very well (see below)
