I'm bringing a WSM and a Weber 22.5-inch kettle. The WSM will mostly be in use for waves of buttermilk brined chicken, but the kettle will be open for general use.
Cool. I'll throw my kettle in the truck just in case we need another.

Matt, thank you for your go-get-em enthusiasm. I will see what I can do to convince Mr Views that this really would be fun and that he won't have to eat the same-old that I always cook, lol.

In general, I can't imagine anyone with an allergy, intolerance, etc. not realizing that it is dangerous to eat other people's food. Eating anywhere except your own kitchen is risky. It took us a year to fully understand the GF diet. . .I would never expect even a professional kitchen to get it quickly without questions, etc.. That said, some items are already GF, nut-free, dairy-free or whatever. A couple of well-placed questions can determine that.

For over ten years, we've brought our own food wherever we go. And, often not attended events such as this. But, it's just plain nice to not have to always do it all yourself and to be able to participate is such things. As Matt mentioned, even if two or three people would help ahead of time, it could mean the difference in someone deciding to come or not.

Again, thanks for the opportunity to discuss it. I may take the opportunity to contact a few of you privately.

    David,

Did I ever tell you about the notorious Galewood scooter rally/bacon cook-off?

    http://scoot.net/gallery/pic.html?pic=38848

The Galewood Cookshack schedule is up in the air, but I'd love to make it to the picnic. If I can attend, I'll bring something mit speck.

My parents live close and will likely stop by. Dad has a good memory of past Chicagoland establishments -- Mom doesn't remember anything. I will handle their contribution, probably some soft drinks and more paper products.

I'm pulling out of my acoustic set due to lack of time. Additionally, my main musical partner is a strict, moralistic vegan. You all are probably better off.

i've got 2 of those small kettle grills that sit on short legs. i'm happy to bring them, particularly if it means i get to eat a chardog. but i dont want to be the one using it or providing the charcoal(as i'm out of town till the very last minute). please let me know, it's absolutely no problem to bring them along if someone else wants to use them. (do they cool down pretty quickly, so i can put them back in the car??? are there designated cans there for dumping ashes???) justjoan

OK, a couple of people have responded to me and at least watermelon is safe, and hopefully ice cream (believe it or not, flour is in some ice cream, and I don't mean cookie dough ice cream, either), so Mr Views has agreed to give it a try. Add two more to the list, please.

So, what for us to bring? If anyone has any requests for something they'd like to try gluten-free, let me know. I will certainly make buns for him, but won't bring extra if no one else needs them (they aren't something you'd choose to eat if you didn't have to).

I'm thinking of a pasta salad of some type or a quinoa tabbouleh and maybe some type of dessert so he's sure to have something in that realm. Maybe a pie? I'll see as the time gets closer and I see what fresh ingredients I can find.

Edited to add: I don't see a lot of "main dish" items yet, so maybe I'll see about some brats or sausage that I know is GF and isn't soaked in beer, lol.

You are a gem! I haven't gone there, but I haven't had any problems with any of the butcher shops/sausage houses I've used. From Italian sausage at Rex to brats at Paulina, they have all been fine. Beer marinated ones are out, but doesn't sound like you are doing that.

It's usually store-bought stuff that you find it. Oddly, in Canada, almost every pre=packaged sausage has wheat listed on the label. We've been in at least five provinces and found the same results. So, we don't eat sausage in Canada.

And yesterday, during my first foray to the new Whole Foods megastore in Northbrook (biggest WF in the Midwest, they said), I sampled the new flavors of Vosges chocolates -- and one had bacon. (Though it was not as interesting as the one with chili.)

I will say that, of chocolate/bacon combos, I thought figmolly's truffles were more successful than the Vosges chocolate.
