ANy hint Bob S now has a more favorable opinion of Manny's?
Regards,
Yes, I'd say that's the case. This time the pastrami had none of the now-legendary rubbery strings of fat; at this point it's batting one for two, and I suppose when I return in another five years (just kidding) we'll have the, er, rubber match.
(I do amuse myself.) Incidentally, the sandwich was sitting on the shelf waiting to be taken, but given the crowds I see no reason to think it had been there more than a few minutes.
Buuuuuut... I still have to give the nod to Uncle Abe's Deli. Their pastrami reminds me of pastrami in Boston-area delis; Manny's, this time at least, reminded me of Boston-area sub shop pastrami. It's hard to define the difference, but oversimplifying, overdone... the sub shop pastrami out there is overseasoned to compensate for its deficiencies. I'm not saying that Manny's was overseasoned per se -- but at Uncle Abe's I taste a better and more interesting seasoning. (My mother used to use pickling spice along with mustard powder and peppercorns in her pastrami seasoning, which may account for my preference.)
That aside, a great group to enjoy a good sandwich with. Michael and Jim are forgiven for ducking out early as, given their work schedules, it was a pleasure that they could make it at all. I hadn't seen VI since the Milwaukee Ave. walkathon, so it was good to see him and meet Mrs. VI, and a pleasure to meet uosullivan and the sdritz contingent.
(Oh, and Peter, sorry you couldn't make it -- I won't be able to do Manny's again next week, but perhaps we could head over to our other rave-fave spot, J&C Bombacigno's...
