    The basics:
    Monday July 6, 2009
    6:30 pm - 9 pm
at Pie Lady's fabulous penthouse in the breathtaking suburb of Niles - just look for the cemetery!

The basic format for the dessert exchange:
    1) I’ll serve a light dinner (TBA)
    2) Bring one recipe size of any dessert – no doubling or tripling of recipes needed! If there’s one thing we know well by now, it's that one recipe size allows for lots of leftovers. In fact, it often creates LOTS of leftovers, so feel free to size your recipe down a bit.
    3) Bring a container(s) to transport your dessert assortment home. I suggest at least two: one for perishables, one for room temperature treats.
    4) Come hungry!
    5) Note: I have a kitty too, a black & white mutt, that loves to be nosy. He may attend the party too, but I promise he won't make a dish; he's more of a charcutier.

Let's keep the participants to 8. Please RSVP here and let me know what you'll bring and I'll add you to the list below:

Me (hostess) - Pistachio, Lemon, Vanilla Shortbread
    Cookie Monster - Brandy Truffles
Aschie30 - Berry Blitz torte or [Rasp]Berry Tea Cake with Mascarpone Filling
    Cathy2 - Pop Tarts
JustJoan - white peach something TBA
    Jygach - Apricot Tart
Eli - upside-down something cake TBA
Pucca - Key Lime Coconut Cake
Foodie1 -Tribute to Katherine Hepburn brownies
Mrs. Ingie - Pavlovas and wee Créme Brûlées

Wow, this one filled up quickly! I don't have any trips planned beforehand, so I will be in town to bake at home. I'm so sorry I missed last night's. I am so envious!

Is there room for me? If so, I'd love to attend otherwise I can also just drop off a dessert to share and no swapping needed for me.

Hey all, I don't know what I'm making for dinner, but it will be light and cool to reflect the (hopefully) toasty weather. So far I'm thinking farmer's market-inspired salad and/or chilled soup of some sort. I'm still thinking about my dessert, although if it's hot I might make honey-cardamom ice cream or sour cherry sorbet.

Any thoughts about what's on the menu for you guys?

For the time being, unless I think of something else, it is probably going to be a key lime coconut cake.

I'm planning to bring some kind of upside down cake. Exactly what will depend on what looks good. (I'm hoping there are decent plums by then.) I can promise it will NOT involve canned pineapple rings or maraschino cherries.

Pie Lady: Upside down cakes are best warm. I'll definitely bake it in advance, but would I be able to pop it in your oven for a bit to warm before serving?

Hosting? I don't know if you already have hosts for August or September, but I'd be willing to host either event. Have to get chairs, but I have room for 20 at the kitchen or 10 at home (both in Pilsen).

figmolly - I think we have a potential host for August (jygach?), but none for September. (If I'm wrong, then I hope someone please speak up!) Thanks so much for your offer of hosting; it's very generous.

The first Monday in Sept is Labor Day which is great for me (the "grilling holidays" are usually slow for us), but wondering how it is for others?

I was looking ahead, and noticed that the LTH Picnic will be right around the corner from our usual Dessert Exchange, which falls on Labor Day. I was going to propose skipping the exchange for Sept, but wanted to know what others thought.

Sounds good to me. I didn't realize that it fell on Labor Day, which is bad for these types of events as people are usually out of town (as I will most likely be).

    I propose -

    figmolly - October
    justjoan - November

Is that all right with everyone?

    No complaints here.

As for my dinner entrées, I'm thinking a salad of some sort and a soup, or possibly two soups just because I love 'em so much. In the Light & Refreshing chapter of my 500+ page soup cookbook, there is a recipe for Balinese Veggie Soup. However, it does have shrimp paste, nuts, and coconut milk, so if people have allergies please let me know; I have many other options to choose from in this giant thing!

I still want to host for August. However, my new boss has scheduled a retreat for Monday, August 3.
Would the dessert group be opposed to holding our get together on Tuesday, August 4 instead?

i'm fine hosting november. i didnt realize- is the exchange always the first monday of the month? i would be fine with skipping september- the LTH picnic should provide enough pig out opportunities for the first half of the month, for me at least. and on further thought- i think for november, 12 people (including me) would work best. (and tuesday, august 4 is fine for me). justjoan

pie lady- the balinese soup sounds great to me. no allergies(except to cucumber and watermelon) and those are emotional, not physical.

Pie Lady, I have no allergies (and that soup sounds great.)

I'm fine with moving the August exchange to Tuesday and I'm fine with either skipping or re-scheduling September.

I wouldn't mind. If I can make it/reply in time/etc., I'd just bring something so loaded with booze it would never spoil. 8)
