    2nd LTH Dessert Exchange

Coming after the tummy-aching success of the inaugural dessert exchange, we've decided to host another one. This time, we’re thinking of adding a new twist: a la minute dessert frying. That means that, if you so choose, you can BYOFI: Bring Your Own Frying Item. It can be beignets, batter-dipped candy bars, funnel cakes – your imagination is the limit!

    Details:
    aschie30’s house (West Town/East Village)
    6:30 p.m.
    Bring a dessert to share.

Here is the basic format for the dessert exchange:
    1) I’ll serve a light dinner (I think I’ll continue happy_stomach’s tradition of serving soup, as that didn’t take up too much tummy room prior to dessert gorging).
    2) Bring one recipe size of any dessert – no doubling or tripling of recipes needed! If there’s one thing we learned last time, it's that one recipe size each netted a lot leftover.
    3) Bring a container to transport your dessert assortment home.
    4) Come hungry. You probably won’t want to eat another dessert afterwards for another month.

Last time, we had 8 people. This time, I’ll try to squeeze in two more and set the limit at 10 and see how that works. If two extra people nets too much dessert, we may have to dial it back again the next time. If you're interested, please sign up below!

    Participants:
    aschie30 (Ginger Allspice Banana Fritters)
Pucca (Cream-cheese -filled "beignets" from Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day with strawberry coulis and possible chocolate dipping sauce)
happy_stomach (Parsnip cake with buttercream frosting/Deep-fried candy bar)
Hellodali (Chai-spiced rice pudding with saffron apricots + apple cake)
Pie Lady (Rosemary Bourbon Coffee Cake)
    eli (Fried Custard Squares)
ymas (Maple Bacon cupcakes from vanillagarlic blog)
foodie1 (Dorie Greenspan's Banana Cream Pie)

I love this idea so much.

I'm experimenting with sweet azuki (red bean) paste and daifuku this month, so I may bring a red bean-something to fry. If that doesn't work out, I'll make turon, Filipino banana "egg rolls."

I can't wait - count me in. I thought as a counterpoint to all of the fried goodies, I'll bring something cool and creamy. I'm going to make that chai-spiced rice pudding with saffron apricots that I mentioned. And I may not get there until closer to 6:45.

The thought is to fry things on the spot, especially given that fried things always taste better fresh. So if you want to fry something, just show up to the dessert exchange with the pre-fried items. You don't have to bring anything to fry -- a traditional baked/cooked dessert is fine -- but if you wanted to, it might add a whole new dimension to our dessert exchange.

I'm in for April. On the fried things, I'm assuming we can do all the prep on something that might be fried (like beignets, for instance) and then bring the batter, right?

Or of course...a whole box of Hostess Twinkies...

Anyhow...looking forward to the planning for April!

Count me in as well. As I said last night, I'll bring my deep fryer...I have one of the largish ones with a basket. Definitely looking forward to this, although I am a bit daunted by the prospect of that much fried dessert all at once.

It is pretty daunting . . .but I'm sure we'll be able to even out the dessert menu so that we'll have a balance of goodies, fried v. unfried. :)

What's better than dessert? Fried dessert! Great idea. Please count me in, if you still have room. Otherwise, hope to catch it the next time around.

I'm going to hold off on picking an item until I hear whether there's room . . .

I'd like to participate! I'm not sure if it's a good idea to have too many tempting desserts around at home, but I love to bake and make them. I'm not sure what I'll bring to the exchange just yet so it's TBD.

Question - is the venue accessible by public transportation?

foodie1- glad you can make it. Where would you be coming from? There are several ways to get to my house from public transportation, however, the easiest ways which have the least walking are via bus.

I was planning on providing details as we got closer to the event, but if you're planning on coming via public transportation, please PM me.

Hey folks -- I'm really sorry to do this but I've got to bow out for April's extravaganza.

It's the first week for me both on classes and for a new job! Yay!

So...I hope you all enjoy yourselves immensely and I'm hoping to join back up again in May.

    Have a great time!

Hey what do you know, that's less than two weeks away. Unless I get the urge to make something else, I'll be bringing Rosemary Bourbon Coffee Cake. Tasty on it's own, but perhaps even better fried...? Maybe I'll throw some pine nuts in there.

Rosemary Bourbon coffee cake sounds fantastic!

I'm having trouble deciding what to make . . . I think I've narrowed it down to Bourbon Ricotta fritters (I'm on a ricotta kick lately), or Zeppole with Fig Vincotto (from Bari), or these Ginger-Allspice Banana fritters (to which, I'll add rum, of course). :)

Then again, Easter is coming up, so maybe there's some inspiration there?

I was thinking about doing an Italian Torta de Riso in the spirit of Easter, but I can't pass up on the chance to fry something...so maybe something fried out of Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day. Will let you know soon.

I'm trying to decide between ricotta fritters (although it sounds like they might already be taken), gulab jamun or some variation on this fried custard squares recipe or I might come up with something completely different in 2 weeks. Definitely looking forward to this. It was so much fun last time.

I've decided on the Ginger-Allspice Banana fritters.

I'll keep a running list in the original post of everyone's desserts.

I still can't decide... I've never had a deep-fried candy bar, so I think I'll stop by World Market, pick up a range of candy and put together some batter. I imagine deep-fried chocolate won't travel well, so that'll be more for tasting at the exchange. I'll also bring some kind of green tea cookie that folks can take home.

I'm very excited for the frying!

Edited because I can't proofread today.
