Oak Park, IL— Allison Hooper is a pretty big deal in the world of American artisan cheese. She has served as the president of the American Cheese Society and is the founder and president of the Vermont Butter & Cheese Co., a 25-year-old iconic cheesemaking operation. Marion Street Cheese Market, a specialty food shop and bistro in Oak Park, IL—will be hosting a special evening with Ms. Hooper on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, beginning at 7pm. This isn’t a ticketed dinner, but Ms. Hooper will be making a brief presentation about her work in field of cheesemaking, and we have created a special menu featuring that work. Interested parties should call 708.725.7200 to make a reservation for 7pm on Wednesday, April 1, to ensure a chance to hear Ms. Hooper speak.

Ms. Hooper has a pretty friggin’ cool background. She attended college in France, and later talked a French farming family into taking her in and teaching her the ways of living off the fat of the land. Little did she know that a full-blown education in cheesemaking would follow. She would later connect with Bob Reese, formally of the Vermont Department of Agriculture, and the two formed a partnership that turned into the Vermont Butter & Cheese Company (also referred to as VBC), based in Websterville, VT.

Today, VBC supports a network of 20+ Vermont family farms, taking in seriously high-quality cow and goat milk to make their arsenal of fromage products. VBC (surprisingly) make a really dynamite cultured butter that Marion Street Cheese Market uses in its bistro every day. The chevre (that’s fresh goat cheese for the non-French) is a classic and the VBC Crème Fraiche and Fromage Blanc should officially replace the sour cream in fridges across America.
