Wanted to take a work colleague to lunch in Pilsen Friday, so I thought of May Streeet Cafe. As I drove past, it was obviously closed. I checked this morning and there's a sign on the entrance that says they are on an "inspirational vacation" until August 2nd. I'm wondering now, since the windows are covered in black garbage bags, there's some graffiti defacing the building, and the phone rings but there's no answering machine giving an update.

Anyway, we went to Decima Musa instead. This was shortly after noon. (I had called earlier to make sure it was open, as sometimes its been closed during lunch hours). When we walked in, two men were washing the floor and cleaning up the place. One asked if he could help us - I said, yes, we're here for lunch. He seemed surprised and said that they had a big party there last night and admitted they "got a late start" opening up. There was one table where we could sit, though it didn't have a table cloth, napkins, or silverware The two women owners were nowhere to be seen - I've never been there when one or both wasn't around - which made me think perhaps they've sold the place. As the cleaning crew continued their work, Abuela, who must be the cook these days, appeared from the kitchen to serve as our waitress as well. She handed us menus, set the table, and brought the chips, salsa and water. I was disappointed that the chips and salsa were not the same as I remember...not bad, but not the fresh, light salsa and non-greasy chips that used to be so memorable. The menu does not have seemed to have changed, but the food wasn't up to their earlier standards. The bones found in my chicken tacos kind of sums up the meal. Any other recent reports on these places?

I was at May for dinner maybe 3 months ago, and it was bustling and just fine.

I've driven by quite a few times since they closed for that vacation-thing. There have been people doing a ton of work on the roof, maybe with the air conditioning unit.

My guess is that they took a vacation while having some repair or maintenance work done, and the work is taking longer than expected, as is so often the case.
