I've always loved Indiana Beach/Lake Shafer since I was a kid. I usually make an annual trip with an unsuspecting newbie, only to find they like it, too(have to be a kid at heart).
They make the corndogs, elephant ears, waffle cones, etc...from booths where all can see.
You have to drive 2 hours from Chicago to get there, but it beats the **** out of Great America, in my opinion. Just expect the classics: flying bobs, tilt 'o whirl, roller coasters that DON'T go upside down. Some rides fly over the lake, there is a cheesy ski show, and "filtered" lake water swimming.
I could go on and on about it's many facets. One game is called Fascination where you compete against others by rolling balls under a glass shelf with 20 holes trying to get five in a row. You play against a clock and watch a non-digital lighted display for your progress. There's an MC and the bell rings after 2-3 minutes with the winner! It's tense and oh so fun. This game room is air conditioned(one of the few places there), and reeks of smoke. I spent a good portion of my summer visits as a kid playing that game. I felt like I was in Vegas. It's still a quarter a game.
I always get a fresh, hot from the oil corn dog and dip it in lots of mustard....one of the simplest of pleasures.
