    ****** SPECIAL NOTE ********

This post, out of a gesture of goodwill towards one particularly overworked, sensible, sensitive, and wise member of the LTH hierarchy, has been altered slightly to reflect a more genteel, family-friendly sensibility. Let it be known, though, that this is an exceedingly rare concession from the Hungryrabbi and is done solely to keep the peace and not done without a measure of protest. Let it also be known that the two words, now excised and/or changed, described practices not only accepted, but heartily encouraged by the Hungryrabbi, Hungryrabbi Enterprises, LTD, and all affiliates thereof.

    Hey LTHF,

Tonight I'll be venturing to Metro (Clark just north of Addison) to see Slint, and will get out of the venue probably in the 11-11:30 time range, I'm guessing. (As you may have guessed, both the neighborhood and venue turn me off, but, hey, it's Slint - the soundtrack to many a wasted evening in my life). Anyone have any good recs for better quality restaurants (coffeeshop/diner above the Golden Nugget/IHOP/Golden-whatever standard, sushi, Italian, even a late night pub with a decent kitchen, just not pizza puff/gyro/hot dog/etc....) around this area? I could have just plugged this query into the Reader's database; I could also stay home tonight, not see one of the most influential rock bands of the last 20 years, and drool to American Idol (sorry for the pre-emptive strike, but a lot of genuine questions seem to get sloughed off to other threads or resources. I'm asking out of a genuine dearth of knowledge and am relying on my fellow brothas and sistas of LTH to give me the skinny. Thanks in advance. Don't mind me.)

Tuscany is on the corner of Waveland and Clark, though some my argue about their authenticity, I have always found the food to be a notch above the average Norther Italian place, but also a little pricy. It's right in the neighborhood, though, so it might be worth checking out.

I think that the Pepper Lounge (3400 block of North Sheffield) is open that late. I haven't eaten there in years, but it was always decent when I went.

Please report back on both the show and the food you find. I have tickets for tomorrow night.

Pizano's is open until 1am. I can only vouch for the pan pizza.

Twisted Spoke is open late. So's Coobah, on Southport. Both are decent.

Diner Grill, my friend. Or Ginger's on Ashland at Grace. Best Irish breakfast in Chicago.

Or if you are looking to bulk up on dirt cheap grub at a very atmospheric bar (that used to be the legendary Schulien's) O'Donovan's has pretty good burgers, nachos and the like, all -U-can eat, for a buck each item from midnight to 1:30 or 2. Coobah and Pepper are solid ideas.

Or go to the Ten Cat, which I agree is a great bar, and wait for the tamalero.

Check out the Side Street Bar at greenview and George. It's a neighborhood bar with a pretty good 70s rock juke box that appeals to the long time locals versus the transient kidz du jour.

The $3.50 cheeseburger is a drunken thing of wonder (at least in the realm of drunken things of wonder). A thick burger with cheese, schizophrenic fries (are we frites or are we steak fries?).

I cannot attest to how good the burger is when one is sober. However, I can recommend it without reservation in the midst of or at the end of a binge.

Thanks for all the good recs, everyone...

The Slint show was... well, amazing. Just like the records, only bigger, more intense, louder, fuller, deeper... we nudged our way forward before the set started and just closed our eyes and melted into the music, much like the way the tastes melt togther in the hash browns with onion at...

Diner Grill!! Yeah, once this was suggested, couldn't pass it up... always an interesting crowd and the food, though basic, is always done right. A real hash-house, in the best sense of the term. Two poached eggs, crisp bacon, wheat toast, and aforementioned hash-a-da-browns (thanks Chico Marx) with unjin extra cwisp. And hot chocolate... which, though from a mix, is actually ok (I usually won't drink hot chocolate from a mix - too watery, not hot enough, etc... but at Diner Grill it just... works.) Also the first place in a long time where the cook asked me for a cigarette. HA! Only too glad to oblige...

    HungryRabbi,

You've hit on one of my favorites, Diner Grill Hash Browns, they, and Edgebrook Diner, are the stuff dreams are made of. I've posted about Diner Grill's Hash Browns a time or two. Here's a Link to an old post.

    Enjoy,
