Garibaldi Tamales is the last tamale vendor I see before I enter the city of Evanston. They usually close up by 8 am, and since I was early this morning, I decided that this will be the first of the tastings.
I asked for one of every tamale, a champurrado and a arroz con leche (I spilt it before I could take a photo). Total cost: $5
Garibaldi Chumpurrado - It was ok. Not much flavor going on besides being sweet.
Garibaldi Tamales (l to r): jalapeno, chicken, pork, sweet
Closeup of Jalapeno and Chicken
Jalapeno - Slices of seeded jalapeno in a light red sauce. This was good, and not as spicy as I would have expected.
Chicken - in a green sauce. This was ok. Not much meat, but ok.
Closeup of Pork and Sweet
Pork - in a heavier red sauce. This type is usually my favorite, but the meat was a little dry for my taste.
Sweet - Honestly scared me with its almost luminous color. Just sweetened dyed corn masa studded with raisins. I did not like it at first, but it grew on me. Not bad.
Arroz con leche - thick and gooey. Again, not much flavor going on besides the sweetness.
