Kritsana Moungkeow, the lovely chef and owner of Sticky Rice, comes from a long line of highly-regarded Thai sweets makers. For many years now, various members of her family have vended sweets and sweet snacks in the marketplaces of her home province of Lampang, in Northern Thailand. Although Kritsana does not consider herself to be a formidable sweets chef, her heritage clearly has some bearing on the variety of khwng wan, or "sweet things," that she has on offer at her restuarant at any given time.

Right now, in addition to khanm thay, Kritsana is featuring khanm pang jii. These are lightly-griddled coconut and taro "pancakes." The batter for this item includes rice flour, shredded coconut, sugar, coconut milk and, lastly, mashed taro, which gives the cakes their distinctive purple hue.

In Thailand, street vendors generally make these to order, but at Sticky Rice, Kritsana makes them ahead of time and gently rewarms them for service.

Anecdotally and tangentially, Lampang is also home to a group of musical elephants. Don't think this is only a gimick or kitsch - check the mp3s because these elephants have got rhythm and soul. Perfect music to accompany human grazing on coconut and taro pancakes, I think.
