I have many-a-time passed La Casa de Las Flores on Fullerton between Austin and Central, and I have always been intrigued by the painted letters on the window: authentico enchiladas Potosinas.
Many moons ago, I
answered MikeG's question,
"how do you find a good Mexican restaurant." I forgot to note the rule about obscure(ish) regional specialities that I do not know, splashed across the window, as attraction to going to a place. For ages, I have been meaning to try this place and see what the enchiladas Potosinas were.
But as been so true for the last few years, the knowledge got shared first. I learned
here from Amata what these enchinaldas were. And knowing what they were, chile infused masa encasing Mexican cheese only made me want to try nearby place more.
La Casa de Las Flores is a madre y padre casa. Madre, from San Luis Potosi, prepares the masa and other salsas, but she was absent last night. Padre ran the whole show, taking our orders and then cooking. I got to say that I got uneasy feelings when the oil got going. It smelled not so fresh, and the resulting enchilada Potosinas was a bit too greasy. It still had a sneaky, fruity chile flavor that I liked. A bit better were chalupitas, Mexican pot roast on chips with lettuce and sour cream. And one of the chowhounditas just adored her regular enchiladas. The menu has a bunch of other interesting things like carne de puerco in home-made sauce and sopes made to order. All in all, a nice neighborhood place with a slight twist.
