I was wondering if someone could tell me about some hidden gems in the River West area. I'm moving there soon and I've read about all the popular spots - Silver Palm, Flo, La Scarola, Cafe Iguana....

What other places should I be sure to check out? I'm moving around the Chicago Blue Line stop.....

Sushi X (if they're still open); 4 Taste is not far away; Thyme; Pie-Eyed Pizza (though I'm growing less enchanted with its slices); and West Town Tavern.

    I would recommend:
Silver Palm - Decent food, but a great place for drinking
West Town Tavern - Good food and good value. For some reason, doesn't get a lot of attention.
D'Agostino's - Thin crust pizza is good, but it's great deal on Wednesdays where large pizzas are half-price. I actually prefer to Pie-Eyed.

Pizza Metro is good, or at least the one on Division was. Not sure if the Ashland (old Adorno's) location is as good, but it's worth a shot--best to eat in.

Just walk (or drive) up Grand from Halsted over the overpass past the gas station and you'll reach Bari Grocery Store and D'Amatos. There's a cute little coffeehouse next to the Burt Car Wash (which I hope stays in business even with the Starbucks opening across the street from the Twisted Spoke). I am blanking on the name but there's another Italian restaurant on the southwest corner of Grand and ?? a block or two west of D'Amatos that has a carryout on the side and a full service restaurant.
If you go further west on Grand to Paulina, there's a coffeeshop type restaurant called Mike's Place. And, a block west of Mike's Place is LT's. There are other restaurants on Grand between May and Racine but I haven't eaten there, so I can't vouch for them, perhaps someone else can.

Are you thinking of Salerno? -- that must be what you mean. I haven't been there but if I remember correctly, VI has said good things about them.

There's a bar on Hubbard and Racine (admittedly, owned by a friend of mine)... Dante's Inferno... I haven't been there in a while (family life keeps me tethered) but I liked it a lot.

Thank you, Antonius! Yes, it's Salerno's. Great veggie pizza! We order it at work. Unfortunately, they don't deliver north of Fullerton.

I like walking up and down this little section of Grand. It's very old looking.

There's lot's more right there on Grand. Oggi, Burger Baron, Cannella's, Cafe Fresco, Bella Note, II Jack's, the caffe across the street from the westerly D'Amato's, Papa's Grand Stand Italian Ice/Sandwiches; further west is Taqueria Jaliscienes. Enjoy.
