A friend just stumped me by asking if there are any BYOB places on Devon. I know a few places serve liquor, but my sense is that many without a license might not look kindly on people bringing in their own booze. Are there any BYO-friendly places on Devon? Bhabi's, perhaps?

I can confirm that Bhabi's Kitchen is indeed BYOB-friendly.

    Bhabi's Kitchen
    6352 N. Oakley
    773-764-7007

Side note - I was at Bhabi's last night and Mr. Syed informed me that his new menu is at the printer. He is adding a variety of seafood dishes including a Fish Curry (catfish and/or tilapia). New items should be available next week.

    Best,
    Michael / EC

A BYOB side note: at hot doug's last saturday there was a table with three mid-20s guys drinking wine with their meal. Two different bottles. And they brought two sets of riedel vinum wine glasses, one set for each wine (they looked like the burgundy and bordeaux glasses).

It just amused me to no end to see someone doing a BYOB at doug's, and doing it with good stemware, no less.

OKay, technically it's not on Devon, but Hema's Kitchen is my favorite BYOB in that area (about a block north of Devon on Oakley). I've heard the second location on Clark isn't as good - the dreaded Check Please Effect ...

We saw those guys too! Couldn't decide if it was funny or just plain silly...anyway, sorry, back to the topic at hand...

General rules of thumb for BYOB on Devon (& else where).

    - hindu veg places - usually no (i.e. Udipi)
    - hindu non-veg - usualy okay (i.e. Hema's)
    - strict muslim - absolutely no way ever.

Key example - Sabri Nehari not only does not serve alcohol, it has a specific policy prohibiting BYOB.

I have a friend who, somewhat foolishly, didn't bother check beforehand & walked in at Zaiqa on Franklin with a six pack (he tells me). He was ushered out extremely quickly.

Conforming to the above guidelines, I've brought beer to Sizzle India.

The experience does, however, lead to a warning: buy before you set out for Devon. The options for alcohol on Devon are limited and those that are there tend to capitalize on the scarcity by charging a bit more than usual.

Oh come on, you don't like the 15 year old bottles of Mogen David they have at Adelphi Liquors?

That place has nice Indian beer, but the wine has to be seen to be believed. Strictly "on a dare" material.

I think Hema's got quite a bit of attention simply because it was BYOB and otherwise Western friendly. However in their Hay Day post-check please, I was served a microwaved samosa...certainly not worth the trip; particularly when a block or two away you could score some of the best food Devon has to offer. Has the Hemma's on Devon improved in the last year?

When I've been there with Indian coworkers (maybe that's the key) it's been fabulous.
