    Hattyn,

Where are some of the places you "know where to get it"? Knowing your preference/taste would be useful in making recommendations.

I obviously know to look for Greek establishments.I have had it at a few fast food places.Looking for the right mixture of spinach and cheese.Flaky crust. Not something that taste like it was frozen then microwaved.

I second that recommendation. while you're at it, try the other pies available there. they're only about $1.50, if I recall correctly.

My favorite weekend lunch is one beef and one spinach pie from MEB. the spicy hummus and fresh pitas are can't-miss also.

One of our favourtie little savoury pie makers is:

    Argo, Inc. Georgian Bakery
    2812 W. Devon Ave.
    Chicago, IL 60659

The spinach pies there are very tasty but I think the meat pies are even better, outstanding even. They have lots of other really good things as well

Concerning Argo, I would guess so... There are a couple of little tables in the bakery and we eat them there as a snack while shopping on Devon (haven't tried bringing them home yet at all) but this is a fine bakery and I would expect that insofar as pastry dough can survive a certain amount of time, Argo's will.

The spinach pie I get at Middle Eastern is not flaky, so it may not be the kind you're looking for, Hattyn, but they have a large variety there. I've also gotten the eggplant, but again, not with a flaky crust. It's like a bread. It's right by the Clark and Foster bus stop, so you can take the #22 there. It's a great little grocery store. I love the brand of pita bread they carry and stock up for the freezer whenever I'm there.

Funny you should mention this bakery. I was just there placing my bread order for tomorrow and was reminded of this thread when I saw box upon box of spanikopita ready to go out the door. I can't vouch for their quality (since I don't eat store bought spanikopita), although I suspect that they are quite good, as their other Greek items (breads and deserts) are top notch. They do the baking for many of the city's Greek restaurants.

Another good source of frozen spanikopita is Lincolnwood Produce. They have several different brands as well as a big selection of philo dough, should you want to make your own. I understand the Athena brand is quite good.

Try Gina's, a fast food joint with interesting offerings, on the W. side of Wabash, a half-block N. of Congress. Breakfast and lunch only. Her baked spinach pies are mighty nice, as are her subs.

On the south end of Grek Town, near Costas, there is a greek bakery. Their spanokopita is wonderful. I believe there are tables for those who would like to sit down and enjoy.
