Rene G has posted an excellent report on the Italian Beef (and other sandwiches) at Uncle Johnny's Grocery.

It definitely looks as if a South Side Beefathon will be in order.
Where there’s smoke, there may be salmon.

Just watched Fox News' "Bottom Line" segment, where they purported to reveal "The Best Italian Beef Sandwich In Chicago!"

The judges were Chef Hanz, from Smith & Wollensky, Danny Ahern, the Zamboni Driver at the UC, and one other guy, Nick LoCasso (sp?) - not sure what his qualifications were.

By some undisclosed methodology, they narrowed it down to three before sending in their "experts" - Jay's in Schiller Park, Donald's, and the illustrious Beefee's.

Survey Says: Beefee's! The Best Italian Beef in Chicago!

What a joke. A cruel joke at that. How much new business will Beefee's gain as a result of that segment?

As a footnote, they also proclaimed that Al & Joe's Giradiniera was some pretty killer stuff. Not sure what the source was, but apparently it is commercially available (they showed the jar at the end). Given the jokingly high level of innacuracy in their beef report, I see no reason to trust thir rec on this stuff either, but it might bear looking into.
I exist in Chicago, but I live in New Orleans.

I saw that last night. The only one I've tried before is Jays, and I'd actually agree with their assessment of that one. But that Beefee pick just blew me away. They showed the guy cooking the beef on the griddle before dipping it. OK, it might be good, it might be bad, I don't know. But it's not Italian Beef, that's for sure.
