    Hey all!

One of my friends just told me about a west Loop sushi place I've never even heard of. It's called Sushi Loop and supposedly it's pretty decent. What do you think?

And do they have non-sushi items for the non-sushi-eating boyfriend? :P Thanks y'all!

It's near my place of employment, so I've been there a few times. Can't comment on the sushi, apart from the kappa maki (good, but it's pretty tough to screw up kappa maki). The non-sushi food is about 50/50 Japanese and Korean, and is pretty decent. (The owners are Korean.) The lunch bento is a good deal. If the sushi is anything like the rest of the food, it's quality mid-priced stuff. The owners/staff are very friendly -- the cashier/hostess once chased me down a block because I had been overcharged a dollar or two for my lunch.

Not exactly revelatory, but it's worth throwing some business their way.

Just ate at Sushi Loop for lunch. I was pretty disappointed, my wife thought it was okay. I ordered bibimbap ($6.95), and it was pretty blah. I've become very picky about my bibimbap since I started making it at home (armed with pre-made veggies from my nearby Korean market), and this was definitely subpar: four piles of bland veggies, a bit of tough bulgolgi meat, and a fried egg over rice. Standard ingredients, but what makes a great bibimbap is flavorful veggies, and these were not.

My wife ordered the "Sushi Bento" ($8.95) which did not resemble any bento I'd ever seen. She got a small salad, no miso soup (!), and these sushi pieces: 1 shrimp nigiri, 1 tuna nigiri, 1 red snapper nigiri, and 6 pieces of cucumber avocado maki. She said the shrimp and red snapper weren't great, but the tuna and maki were good. I guess the price isn't bad for the number of pieces, but since 2 of the 4 types of sushi weren't good, that's disappointing.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend Sushi Loop. Not offensive, but not great either: 5/10.

Side note: in the men's restroom, there is a poster of a topless Korean model. Someone needs to find out if there's an equivalent male poster in the women's room...

Mediocre sushi joint...also terrible service. I live in the neighborhood and have tried it three times. Basically has driven me to consistently pay big bucks for Sushi Wabi delivery and freshness .

Hi everyone, this is my first post, I've been trolling for a while and secretly taken some of your suggestions, but this seems like a good time to open up being that I have been to this establishment 20 times +.

Sure the sushi isn't worthy of five stars at this joint, but UIC students get 10% off, and they have one of my all-time favorite rolls there.
    The mountain I.

If you go to Sushi loop, get anything you want, but please try the Mountain I roll. It's one of the best rolls I've EVER had! I'm no expert connoisseur of fine sushi, but I've had my fair share of decent sushi around the country and nothing, I mean nothing beats the mountain I.

Then again.. this is just my opnion. :)

If I may ask, what goes into a "Mountain I" roll?

mountain - seasoned lobster wrapped in sushi rice and covered with baked crabstick, masago, slice squid, green tempura flakes

mountain ii - same but covered with baked scallop, masago, black tobiko, red tempura flakes

mountain ii is $2 more, but mountain i is much better ^_^

Tiger is good too, there's 3 kinds, but I prefer ii: fresh salmon, black tobiko wrapped in ebi tempura, unagi (mmmm....)

But be sure to check the carryout orders before you leave, because I've been burned a few times :( . They've forgotten my california rolls, miso soup, and red bean ice cream (3 different occasions), although the staff have always been very friendly.

There's korean bbq (only mediocre), bulgolgi, katsu (chicken, don, or fish), shio yaki (mackerel or yellowtail collar), suki yaki, teri yaki (chicken, beef, or salmon), tempura, yose nabe, stir fried rice, over rice dishes, u don, and a list of things in their appetizers/soups/salads.

So I finally made it to Sushi Loop last Saturday evening. Located in the Greektown neighbourhood, the restaurant looks unassuming and simple. It wasn't very crowded (only one other table was occupied by a family of three) and the ambiance was quite pleasant with soft (rather dim) lighting and simple decor. The music of the night was Jack Johnson and the air conditioning was freeeeeezing!

Service was friendly and prompt. My sushi came within 10 minutes of ordering! I had 3 pieces of sake (fresh salmon) sashimi. Judging from its buttery smooth texture and delicious taste, it was very very fresh! I also had the spicy scallop roll and the chef was very generous with the scallop and the scallop was also fresh and succulent and sweet! Yum! The tuna and avocado roll I had was rather mediocre/ordinary.

After this, I had another 3 pieces of sake sashimi (yes, I did) and a spicy scallop sushi (yes, I did). The waiting staff was quite astonished at my appetite (I wonder why coz it ain't that much!) was making some rather rude comments about me in Chinese (not knowing that I understood Chinese too) :?

Overall, I had a good experience despite the waitress gossips. The chef was extremely gracious and greeted all his guests and made sure everything was allright. I loved the fresh salmon and scallop served here! Unfortunately I wasn't able to try the green tea cake (sounds so gooood!). Maybe another time

Looking at their menu (link here), I am surprised to find fugu kawa (blowfish skin) as one of their offerings... Hmmm...

Was the salmon listed as sake or fresh salmon on the menu? I only ask because to me sake has always been smoked salmon and namasake fresh salmon..
