I'm looking for a place to get a corn dog....a little plump weiner wrapped all snug in a coat of cornmeal batter. Where can I go to get a decent one? I'm hoping I don't have to resort to buying a frozen package from Jewel... :?

The Corn Dog at Hot Dougs is really good. Justin, the guy that busses tables there, told me that he has eaten one every single day that he has worked there, which must be some kind of endorsement.

    Hi,

Unless something has changed, I can hope, Hot Doug's corn dogs are frozen not fresh.

Lake County Fair next week always has someone preparing freshly made corn dogs. They pierce a 6- or 12-inch dog with a stick, dip it in batter and fry! I will be there all next week and will send pictures early on for your eating vicariously.

Most of the county fairs in the area have freshly made corn dogs. It is part of the fair experience. Too bad nobody with a bricks and mortar store are making them fresh. I know Hot Doug has it on his list of things he would like to do.

    Regards,

I was proud that I resisted the corndogs at the Intonation Festival this weekend...

And if next week at the Lake Co. Fair doesn't fit your schedule [but if it does, be sure to buy a few Pepsis!], fresh corn dogs are included at one of my favorite chow destinations:

Not that this will help you, but I recently had a masterful corndog at Joliet Speedway. This was not your average open a box and deepfry operation. They used 18" long skewers to impale two dogs. This was then hand dipped in a fluffy cornmeal batter and fried to perfection. I must admit to devouring at least 6 of these over the two day period I was there. Hopefully, these stands will be there during the IRL race.

I've always loved Indiana Beach/Lake Shafer since I was a kid. I usually make an annual trip with an unsuspecting newbie, only to find they like it, too(have to be a kid at heart).

They make the corndogs, elephant ears, waffle cones, etc...from booths where all can see.

You have to drive 2 hours from Chicago to get there, but it beats the **** out of Great America, in my opinion. Just expect the classics: flying bobs, tilt 'o whirl, roller coasters that DON'T go upside down. Some rides fly over the lake, there is a cheesy ski show, and "filtered" lake water swimming.

I could go on and on about it's many facets. One game is called Fascination where you compete against others by rolling balls under a glass shelf with 20 holes trying to get five in a row. You play against a clock and watch a non-digital lighted display for your progress. There's an MC and the bell rings after 2-3 minutes with the winner! It's tense and oh so fun. This game room is air conditioned(one of the few places there), and reeks of smoke. I spent a good portion of my summer visits as a kid playing that game. I felt like I was in Vegas. It's still a quarter a game.

I always get a fresh, hot from the oil corn dog and dip it in lots of mustard....one of the simplest of pleasures.

After a tip from stevez, I checked out the corn dogs at Fat Willy's. These are the real deal: all-beef, natural-casing dogs enrobed in a golden brown coating, full of corn flavor, with a slightly irregular shape and a cute little curl of batter at one end. (I'll spare you my photos, which turned out somewhat obscene.)

They're $3.50 each, on the appetizer menu. (For 45 cents more, they come with fries on the kids' menu.) The rest of the food's pretty good, too.

Last time I was at Huey's Hot Dog stand (in Andersonville on Balmoral, just west of Clark Street) they had a hand-printed sign up proclaiming "We now have corn dogs and veggie corn dogs!" I didn't order one, don't know if they're frozen or fried to order but perhaps I'll be able to investigate further this evening.
