As I mentioned
elsewhere,
Spoon Thai is one of the best places in town to sample from the class of Thai drinking foods, called
kàp klâem, and, in addition, it is
nearly the only place in town where you will find items like
nãem khâo thâwt and
kao-lão mũu yâw on the menu.
One
kàp klâem item that is
absolutely unique to the
Spoon Thai menu, though, is
yam maa-mâa. This somewhat peculiar Thai
yam, or "salad," is made with MaMa™ instant noodles*. And, as odd as that may be, I can assure you that it is a thoroughly delicious oddity.
yam maa-mâa
For the preparation of this dish, a packet of MaMa™ instant noodles is quickly blanched and drained. For service, the noodles are then combined with shredded poached chicken breast meat, boiled shrimp, slivered red onion, scallion, cilantro, chopped fresh red chile, and plenty of fish sauce. The flavour profile of the finished dish** is dominated by the saltiness of the fish sauce, but followed very closely by the bracing sting of the chopped fresh chile.
Regards,
Erik M.
* MaMa™ noodles are the Thai equivalent of Top Ramen, and just as with Top Ramen, there is a wide variety of noodle types and flavours to choose from.
** The finished dish arrives to the table at roughly room temperature.
