Yesterday when I trekked out to the hinterlands of Morton Grove to get my cast off, I noticed this little spot just at the beginning of the strip mall in which my doctor had his office. Based on a couple of comments I made inside the office, most of the staff is scared of it, even though they do carry the basics for the natives.

The maiz and ube (purple yam) ice creams were side by side in the display case, so I asked for a taste of each, and ended up getting a cup with a scoop of each in it. The ube ended up being relatively uninteresting -- honestly, it ended up seeming like sweet cream ice cream to me, little flavor that I could find beyond the basics -- but the maiz was wonderful, each bite flavorful, packed with corn kernels, more savory than sweet. Were I not so far from my home, I'd've been happy to pick up a quart.

They also have jackfruit, calamansi, halo halo, and other flavors I left for later experimentation.

Don't have the exact street address, but they're in the 5700 block of Dempster, just west of the Edens, in Morton Grove. That's a day trip for me, being an adherent of public transportation, so I'd love to hear about any sources nearer the city.

That Dutch Treat Creamery, west of the Edens and east of Menard on Dempster, used to be a Village Creamery, and seems to be operated by people formerly connected to that business. The ice cream at Dutch Treat and Village Creamery is apparently the same product.

Did they have passionfruit by the scoop? The Village creamery on oakton never carries it, though the one in Niles does. It, and the pomelo sorbet, tend to be my favorite flavors at Village.

One other Ice Cream Related note - the little lebanese grocery store Peyyand (next door to the newish Larsa - which I also owe a review of) on the 3700 block of Dempster in Skokie carries mashti malone persian ice cream from LA. Rose and pistachio were available IIRC. Its actually a surprisingly good store given the small amount of space, whole dried limes, whole sumac berries, etc are fit into the small space

They did have passionfruit, though I'd encourage a call (and apologize for not having a number available) if you're making a trip for it.

Also worth knowing about; thanks for the word. Alas, the Dempster bus runs infrequently enough that I'll have to plan any outing carefully. (As it was, a bus zoomed by while I was getting my ice cream, leaving me with a 40-minute wait for the next one.)

We paid a visit to the Oakton branch of Village creamery on Sunday night. Since they we very busy, and seemed frazzled, we didn't ask for too many tastes.

Some of the winners were cantalope, tiramisu, and coconut. I'm not even much of a tiramisu fan, but I thought it was very good. It included pieces of real tiramisu and my daughters LOVED it. I was looking forward to trying the maiz, but they did not have it on Sunday.

Very good ice cream, but not inexpensive. Looking forward to trying more of the unusual flavors.
