This picture was not taken at the restaurant but shows this unique-in-Chicago (not unique-to-Chicago) treat as it is sold. It’s possible there are other restaurants in Chicago selling this but I’ve not found them.

That’s it -- cake in a jar from Lagniappe. In fact, this is the same specimen you later ate (after we picked it over a bit). I like Lagniappe quite a lot but CIAJ isn’t one of my favorites. Still, I applaud them for serving this oddity (odd, at least in Chicago, and to me). Can anyone say a bit more about cake in a jar? I know almost nothing about it. This reminds me, I need to get back to Lagniappe soon.

It's a very popular holiday gift recipe, ever present on rec.food.cooking back in the day and now all over the Internet, as Google will show you. The key to making it, if you ever do, is to use a fairly dense quick-bread recipe, and don't overfill the jars. My preference is to use straight-sided jars, from which the cake may be extracted whole.
