I was just at Costco picking up hot dog condiments (There will be plenty for other uses as well) and, on a whim, I picked up a 48 pack of bottled water to bring along.

    Cathy2,

Sorry, I guess putting that in quotes didn't appropriately connote that I was joking... forget how hard tone is to imply online... rest assured that I'm much too old for such sophomoric hijinks, and look forward to a mature gathering focused on food... (i chose culinary school, not bartending school for a reason). ;-)

I'd bring a thermos of coffee, but i broke my grinder using it for spices. Dang. I've got a bottle of bitter lemon and one of chinotto in the fridge, will try to bring those along, maybe a thermos of cocoa if the weather is drizzly?

    blueswench,

    Thank you for understanding.

Hot chocolate sounds great. IF the weather man works with us, we will have 65 degree sunny day. If not, then we have a shelter, lots of warm bodies and great food!

Looking forward to meeting you! 5 to the 2nd power!

Mary and I will be driving in from Indiana and hope to arrive at the park by 9:00. Any suggestions where to get a decent breakfast along I-90 - I-94 in Chicago. I prefer something close to the expressway and hopefully reasonable parking. I'll be dragging my BBQ pit along.

Links to places or addresses are fine. LTH suggestions are great, but the primary decision will probably be based on easy it might be for me to get lost. I wish Al's on Taylor was open breakfast

Park the pit at the forest preserve and drive over to Edgebrook Diner. It's really close. If you don't want to leave the pit unattended, there is a parking lot with an alley entrance just to the south of the diner. (In back of the hardware store. If you get lucky, you might even find street parking right in front of the restaurant.

    LTH,

While much of the LTHForum Picnic planning conversation is focused on what people are bringing/making the LTH picnic is mainly about community spirit and fun, an excuse to get together and enjoy each others company. If, for whatever reason, logistics, lack of kitchen space, monetary, people are unable to bring something to the picnic that in no way should preclude joining in on Sunday.

LTHForum is about participation be it chatting about matters culinary on the board, walking down North Clark Street in search of the perfect taco or enjoying a late summer picnic in the park, the more the merrier, all are welcome.

Hope to see one and all Sunday.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

Appetizer Antonius Italianate antipasto dish (?)

I noticed I'm still thought of as being questionable... Let me put an end to that.. I will be there and will bring two Italianate dishes,* both of which can fall into the happetizer category though they may be regarded and treated as belonging to other parts of a meal... inshaa'llah!

Only divine intervention can stop me.

I am quite disappointed that petit pois and I won't be able to attend. It sounds like it's going to be a great event.

We'll be on a coastal New England road trip, tasting plenty of food and taking plenty of pictures for a full report.

Have a great time at the picnic, LTHForum.

I'm back from my trip and beginning to think about what I might be able to bring on Sunday. I'm not sure what is still needed, but Cathy2 suggested looking at what CrazyC was going to bring, as she can't come now. I don't have a cooler. I am pretty certain I'd be able to buy foil trays, if they're still needed (and assuming this means disposable serving trays). I can certainly pick up some taco chips. Let me know if foil trays and chips are still among the things needed, and whether or not I'm correct in my guess about the foil trays. Also, how many? Are three trays and five or six bags of chips enough? Or should I buy more trays? Or is there something completely different that might be needed?

    See you Sunday.

Would it be rude to show up at my first LTH event with only a condiment? I'm thinking of making my mother's chimichurri recipe and bringing a couple jars - I'll be spouseless, but I'll have Sparky (whose real name is Scott) with me. He's 6 years old and is hoping for grilled octopus...

I enjoy reading everything you all have to say so much, and can't wait to meet you all.

(PS - if there's something you're more in need of than steak sauce, please let me know)

Just show up. There is no particular need to bring anything if you don't want to. Like just about every LTH event, there should be way more than enough food for everyone.

    Hi,

I met dees_1 at Mitsuwa last night to pick up supplies for the picnic. Dee's a real trooper, she personally cannot attend though she very graciously donated disposables:

    Disposable bowls: 119
    8 inch paper plates: 28
    16 oz solo cups: 20
    9 oz solo cups: 35
    9 oz foam hot/cold cups: 11
    Paper cups: 16
    Plastic dinner forks: 43
    Plastic forks: 8
    Plastic knives: 3
    Plastiuc tea spoons: 86
    Plastic snack size spoons: 20

Dee also has donated stack of Pillsbury Bake_off cook books for interested parties.

Talking and eating with Dee and her husband, though we had never met before, they are definitely one of us!

    Thanks again!

    Regards,

We should set up a bucket for contributions (green ones). That way we can reimburse those who have bought extensive non-culinary necessities (those whose non-culinary contributions are above and beyond their contribution to the picnic), and whatever remains can be donated to a local food bank.

    GAF,

While that is a very thoughtful idea, Forest Preserve regulations forbid exchange of money on their groves.

I consider my contribution as a gift to this wonderful community that has evolved. I hope everyone feels the same way about their contribution. Fortunately, it is the gift that keeps on giving!

More random suggestions for people who want to bring something but haven't come up with anything yet:

Flank or skirt steak, tortillas, etc for tacos or steak sandwiches on some of that turano or labriola bread
    Tamales, carnitas, something like that
Chicken/beef/lamb/pork skewers of some variant. Shish ka bob, satay, alambres, whatever.

I do think there's a slight main dish shortage :)
